Wendy's story…

“My dad, Geoff, was my rock. He was a joker – you could see him doing the Ministry of Silly Walks around M&S. He was a whizz at bowls; he loved steamers and trips on the water. He had a way of putting people at ease. When he was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2013, it was devastating. He lived with it for years, but it later spread to his kidney and prostate.”

“Towards the end of his life, he was in the hospital for around five days, struggling with a UTI. When they called me to say there was a bed at the hospice. I remember saying without hesitation, ‘Yes, please.’ After the first night, I went to see him and was shocked at the change – he was cleanshaven, his hair had been cut. I can’t tell you what it meant to see him looking like his old self.”

"I’ll never forget a doctor making me a cup of tea, bringing me cake so I didn’t need to leave dad’s side."

“The hospice was an absolute godsend for us. We could bring in personal things, a cuddly bear we called Cromwell and pictures of mum. Nothing was too much for the team – I’ll never forget a doctor making me a cup of tea, bringing me cake so I didn’t need to leave dad’s side. And the nurses were just angels.

When someone you love so much is ill, you’re already grieving their loss. But the hospice allowed us to spend as much quality time with dad as possible. To know that he was comfortable, at peace – this was the greatest gift we could have. Please, if you can, help more families like ours experience this most wonderful care.”

"Thank you for your support!"

People often say they feel a sense of relief when they walk through our doors. Our number one goal is to give local people relief, to provide the comfort and dignity each of us would wish for when coping with a life-limiting illness. And, a peaceful death when the day comes. It is an honour to provide this service to our community – free of charge – to people around north Cumbria. Even though we meet people during horrendous times, we’re here with arms outstretched, offering a kind of comfort blanket.

Without your help, we could not continue to offer a vital lifeline to local families in need – thank you!
