Meet the Jigsaw Team

Name: Hannah Allison

Role: Health Care Assistant

Worked at Jigsaw for 10 years.

What does your role involve on a daily basis?

My role involves personal care for all the children and young people, clinical care when required and feeding and nutrition. The personal care can include washing and dressing, continence care, moving and handling with patients and the use of hoists and mobility aids.

I liaise with the nurse in charge and the rest of my colleagues about the day, seeking guidance when needed. I also work with other professionals, liaising with them regarding the children and young people we care for, this can include Community Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Physios.

The role allows me to join in with the activities that are planned for the day by the Activity Team. Working in Jigsaw there is never a dull moment and the crazier you are, the better. I support the children and young adults on outings, ensuring the right equipment is taken and appropriate risk assessments are in place; Providing care and support to children, young people and their families with end of life care too.

I also help to plan our annual Jigsaw Christmas Party, which we start planning in the summer, and work alongside the fundraising team, supporting them at Jigsaw events.

Plus, I am always able to make a good cup of tea and coffee for staff, children, young adults, families and any visitors we welcome to Jigsaw.

Why did you choose to work at Jigsaw?

I chose to work at Jigsaw as I had an interest in working with children and young people with complex medical conditions. I also felt that it would be a very rewarding job. I worked with children in my previous roles and wanted to further develop my skills and experience of working with children and young people.

What do you most like about your job?

The best thing about working at Jigsaw is looking after the most amazing, remarkable and courageous children and young people. At Jigsaw all children are individual and all care and activities are person centred to make their stay happy and enjoyable.

At Jigsaw we not only support the children and young people that attend but also their families. We plan Sibling’s Days throughout the year and Mums and Dads Nights, as well as our annual Christmas Party. These are all extremely rewarding and fun filled days and everyone leaves with a smile on their face.

I also feel that I, along with a great team at Jigsaw, get to support families through the most difficult time in their lives when we support children and young people at end of life care. The care these families receive is amazing and the memories and keepsakes that we do during this time are ones to cherish. I feel it is an honour and a privilege to support the children, young people and families at this time.

I am lucky enough to work with such an amazing team. I feel proud every day with the care we all provide to our families. It is an absolute pleasure to work at Jigsaw.

What is your favourite memory of working at Jigsaw?

I have had many enjoyable days at Jigsaw, no two days are ever the same!

Some of my best memories though are making music videos with the children and young people. These have included Grease, Thriller and The Beatles to name but a few. Not many jobs you get to dress up as Sandy from Grease or a Zombie.

I also absolutely love our annual Christmas party for our children, young people and their families. This is an afternoon filled with lots of fun, laughter and memory making. The team put a lot of time and effort into planning this event, but it makes it all worthwhile to see the smiles on our families’ faces.
