35 years of Eden Valley Hospice

2 January 2026

2026 marks Eden Valley Hospice’s 35th year of providing quality care to those in North Cumbria and Southwest Scotland!

In October 1991, the building of Eden Valley Hospice was completed, and welcomed its first patients into the adult day care unit. The following year, the first inpatient was admitted, an 11 month old baby. The Adult Inpatient Unit now has 10 beds, and the adjoining Jigsaw building, Cumbria’s only Children’s Hospice, has 5 beds.

Initially, £1 million was needed to build Eden Valley Hospice, and thanks to the community uniting, this dream became a reality. It’s this same community spirit that amazes us each year. You raise 80% of the £14,523.99 a day needed to keep the hospice going.

A hospice is more than a building; it’s about improving the quality of life we have left.

Hospice care is a dram of whisky to bring in the New Year…

For those who can and would enjoy it, having a glass of your favourite drink is the way to celebrate. And for one patient this was a simple request. It would usually have been easy to fulfil as our store cupboard is well stocked all year round, but on this occasion there wasn’t a drop to be found!

Julie, our Chief Executive, rushed to the shops before they closed this afternoon and brought back a bottle or two so that all our patients could welcome 2026 however they wanted.

Hospice care is all about making the most out of the life you have left, and if that’s with a dram of whisky at midnight, then we are more than happy to make that happen.

It’s moments like this that can only be made possible with your ongoing generosity; without you, your hospice would not be here.

Thank you for all your support over the last 35 years.
