About Eden Valley

Eden Valley Hospice provides care for adults with life limiting illnesses from North Cumbria.

Our Adult In-Patient Unit has 10 beds in single en-suite rooms. The home from home environment creates a relaxing atmosphere for patients and families with each room overlooking the beautiful walled garden.

Our Day Services provide care for up to 15 people a day, four days a week. Most days the sweet smell of freshly baked cakes fills the hospice as patients, nurses and volunteers exchange stories about what has happened since they last met.

Environmental statement

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice has changed enormously since the first part of the building opened in 1991.

As extensions have been added over the last 30+ years it has meant we have a number of different plumbing, heating and lighting systems inside and out. Since 2022 we have embarked on a journey of consolidation, improvement and sustainability. This is a long-term ambition.

Our building is showing its age, and we acknowledge it is a product of its generation with insulation standards lower than we would like.

In 2023 we worked with an intern from Lancaster University – Aniket Deshpande (pictured with CEO Julie Clayton) – to review the challenges we face and look for solutions to some of the issues we face. We know our carbon footprint could be improved and are exploring renewable energy resources to make our building more efficient and sustainable.

Within the next five years (by 2029) we will:

  • Streamline our energy systems.
  • Consolidate our hot water storage.
  • Increase our use of renewable energy sources.
  • Improve our energy efficiency.
  • Replace infrastructure with more sustainable equipment.
  • Improve waste reduction and recycling.
  • Demonstrate a smaller carbon footprint (compared to Summer 2023).
  • Work towards alignment with the NHS Net Zero policy.

This will include:

  • Reducing our energy consumption by 20% by 2029.
  • Increasing our green energy generation by 30% by 2029.
