Hospice Pond Redevelopment

Hospice Pond Redevelopment

During the summer of 2018 the hospice pond area was transformed with the installation of new decking, bi-fold doors and seating. The transformation will allow more people to access the beautiful space and to enjoy the outsides whilst staying and visiting the hospice.

As part of Carlisle’s Give a Day to the City a host of local businesses donated their time to develop the pond area free of charge. A hospice supporter agreed to cover the pond refurbishment as part of a “living legacy”, but costs were kept down due to the amazing generosity of the Cumbrian community.

Doug McGarr, Facilities Manager at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw said,

“I also wanted to redevelop our internal pond area, making it more of a focal point. After consultation with patients, families and staff, we made the decision to open up the area by putting in decking over the pond and having bifold doors added to provide full access for patients.

“Following the article in the Autumn 2017 newsletter I received a call from Debbie Waite at WW Windows who very kindly offered to supply and fit the bifold doors completely free of charge. We also met with representatives from Give a day to the City who were very keen to help us fulfil our dreams.

“Several local companies got involved to supply all the materials required free of charge and then McKnight and Son Builders offered to install the decking free of charge.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the result and so grateful to all the generous local firms who got behind the project and transformed this space in to a wonderful, calm and safe outdoor environment for our patients and their families to enjoy. The support we get from businesses and local people is outstanding and we are well on our way to achieving the dreams we have for the hospice.”

Debbie Waite, WW Windows Carlisle Limited, said

“We believe in helping and supporting the Eden Valley Hospice simply because they help and support so many others. It is fantastic that this has made such a big difference for everyone and to know that we have been part of creating a beautiful area for patients, families and staff to enjoy over the coming years is amazing.”

Wayne McKnight, Manager Director at McKnight Builders, said

“Eden Valley Hospice plays a vital part in our community and many people rely on it for support every year. I felt that this particular project stood out and, by assisting, I felt we were making an important contribution to the community and to the users of the hospice.

“On a personal note my mum spent her last few days at the hospice and I thought the place and all the staff were exceptional.

“I was delighted to participate in the Give a Day to the City project. I think Andy Fearon and his team have done a fantastic job on putting this together.”
