Ward Volunteer

Role Summary

To be a member of the Adult Inpatient Unit, supporting the clinical team to ensure a high standard of service is provided to patients and visitors.

Days and times

Monday to Sunday 9:30am to 12:30pm (flexible with times subject to volunteers availability

Role Requirements

• Volunteers must be 18 or over.
• Willingness to undertake any necessary training.
• Ability to work as a team player
• Patience and composure.
• A caring, sympathetic, sensitive manner and a non-judgemental approach.
• Reliable/ dependable and flexible.
• Understanding of confidentiality.
• Strong verbal communication skills.
• Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
• Ability to follow instructions.

Duties and responsibilities

• Spending time with patients, spend quality time listening and talking to them.
• Assist ward staff making drinks for patients/relatives/staff.
• Assist staff in serving meals/drinks to patients.
• Ensure the ward kitchen is clean and tidy at all times.
• Changing patient’s water jugs and refreshing/removing flowers.
• Help patients with their menu choices and check if they have any special dietary requirements.
• Liaise with reception regarding welcoming visitors onto the ward.
• Assist in general ward tidiness.
• Assist patients in minor tasks e.g., pass tissues, drinks etc. For patients that are unable to eat/drink independently, inform clinical staff when nursing assistance is needed (Check with the team lead on shift which patients can independently eat/drink and those that are unable).
• To ensure that dirty trolleys, crockery, etc are returned to the main kitchen and cleaned dishes are put away in the ward kitchen.
• To complete a patient feedback/experience survey with each patient (if they agree to take part in the survey).
• Carry out duties and responsibilities in line with our Hospice values.
• Comply with all Eden Valley Hospice policies and procedures.
