About this Appeal
Do you have someone special to remember this Christmas?
2020 has been a difficult year for many of you I’m sure. For those who have experienced a bereavement, you may not have been able to celebrate the life of your loved one in the way that you wanted. For those of you who usually mark special anniversaries of your loved one, wedding anniversaries and birthdays for example, we recognise that these occasions too may not have been as poignantly marked as you would have liked. I have no doubt however that your cherished memories and your love for those who are no longer with us, shine brightly.
Here at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, our patients receive the highest level of medical and nursing care, along with counselling and spiritual support. We do everything we can to support not only our patients, but family and friends too. That help continues for as long as they need us.
The hospice itself has had difficulties this year. The challenges that COVID19 presented us with meant we had to adapt to continue to provide the vital compassionate and dignified care to local people when they needed it the most. At a time when strict visitor restrictions were imposed, the dedication that our staff displayed in order to still help families make memories was wonderful to see.
One patient wanted to see her home one last time but this wasn’t possible with lockdown. However, after speaking to the patient’s husband we helped him to video the house room by room. After a bit of IT help we downloaded videos onto a laptop that we left in his wife’s room for them both to view. She watched the clips with animation showing staff her beautiful home that she was so proud of. Her cats also made a special video appearance and the patient was ecstatic to see them. She watched those clips daily for a couple of weeks before she became too unwell to watch them any longer.
Your hospice care teams will be here over Christmas, helping to provide vital care and support for local patients and their families. There will be special moments of light and brightness, with many new memories being made – all safe in the comfort that each patient has access to the highest quality care which includes symptom control and pain management.
This care is only possible because of wonderful supporters, just like you. Each hour of care costs just over £450 and as an independent local charity, we have to fund the first £350.
By dedicating a light in memory of your loved one/s, not only will you be celebrating their life and remembering those moments of brightness with them, you’ll be helping patients and families spend Christmas together, making special memories.
Light Up a Life Services
Unfortunately, we have taken the difficult decision to not host this year's Light Up a Life services. We will still be marking Light Up a Life online as we know how important it is to so many people in the local community. We are currently working on our plans and will share more information on this page and acros social media in the coming weeks and months.
Send a Christmas Message to the Hospice
This Christmas, we are giving you the opportunity to send a special Christmas message to the patients, families, staff and volunteers at Eden Valley Hospice. Simply download and print one of our Light Up a Life baubles, add your message and return to the hospice (click here for address). Each bauble and special message will be displayed in the hospice over the festive period.
